Frequently Asked Questions
There are two commonly asked questions we receive when visitors come to Highlands Latin School Phoenix Valley.
What is a cottage school?
Cottage Schools are homeschool support programs that meet 1-3 days per week. All instruction is provided in the classroom with parents providing homework and individual assistance throughout the week. Class sizes are kept to a minimum to increase participation, and ensure a high level of attention is granted each student. Lessons are incremental, content is age-appropriate, and students learn the important skill of quality written work completed in a timely manner. Homework is moderate and is for the purpose of practicing or preparing for a lesson.
What is classical education?
Classical education is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue through the study of the liberal arts and the Great Books. The liberal arts are the universal linguistic and mathematical skills students need to excel in every area of life. The Great Books are the means by which we pass on the cultural heritage of the Christian West. A mastery of both is the best way to prepare a child for a life of wisdom and virtue, and Memoria Press’ comprehensive and accessible classical Christian curriculum provides the tools for mastering these two essential elements of education.
Educating to the highest standards of the classical tradition
CLASSICAL
In the tradition of Western civilization, education and classical education have always been synonymous. Classical education can be distinguished from modern education, in that it does not neglect the important first step of giving students the classical tools for both intellectual development and for understanding their classical Christian heritage.
CHRISTIAN
The cornerstone of our faith is the timeless Apostles' Creed. This serves as a guidepost for our students, teachers, and staff on the universal principles of Christianity. We pledge to uphold the traditional morality of the Bible and recognize it as the divinely inspired Word of God. By teaching these beliefs and maintaining a moral code rooted in Christianity, Highlands Latin Schools can ensure its students receive an education based on these foundational principles.
TRADITIONAL
The traditional classroom provides many advantages, as it has shown to be superior to modern methods. Led by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher, students gain a deeper understanding of each subject, allowing them to gain knowledge more efficiently. This type of setting is consistent with human nature, as the teacher-led approach helps to enhance learning and allows students to gain the most from the educational experience.
